The Department of Microbiology, established in 1989, offers a well-structured undergraduate program that builds strong fundamentals along with practical and research skills. The department is supported by a team of highly experienced teachers, with an average teaching experience of over 30 years, ensuring quality guidance and mentorship. The department consistently achieves excellent results at the Third Year University examinations, reflecting its strong academic foundation.
The department adopts innovative and highly engaging teaching-learning practices to strengthen conceptual understanding, and promote creativity and critical thinking. A well-equipped laboratory provides students with strong practical training. Industrial visits, guest lectures, certificate courses and internships, further complement learning and help bridge the gap between theory and real-world applications.
The Association of Royal Microbiologists actively organizes a wide range of co-curricular activities, contributing to the overall development of students. The department is also associated with the Microbiologists Society, India for co-curricular engagement and with the Collaborative Understanding of Biology Education (CUBE) initiative to enhance research exposure.

The co-curricular activities of the department are conducted under the aegis of Association of Royal MicroBiologists – ARaMB.
Subject related games, movie screening and competitions provide fun and frolic in learning and understanding concepts of microbiology. Guest lectures and educational visits are conducted to provide practical exposure and foster understanding of real-world applications. Students are encouraged to take up summer training / internships in health care centres, food industries.
The academic year 2025-26 saw more creative games, competitions and movie screening. Talks on IPR and Careers in the food industry & food audit generated interest & added value to those wanting to pursue further in these fields. Visits to CSSD, ACTREC, Bisleri Plastic Upcycling Plant, Mogharpada lake were organized. Students attended Workshop on composting and initiated the composting process at their residences and in their housing societies.
The association provides a platform for healthy interaction among students and alumni and also to showcase their leadership, team work and organisation skills.
In the year 2024-25, a good number of career-oriented talks were held from how to network using LinkedIn, facing interviews to careers in food industries & other allied fields. Students were taken on a visit to Katraj Dairy, Green Vitals Biotech, Varni Analytical LLP, CSSD, BhaktiVedanta Hospital.
Important birth dates of scientists who made major contributions in microbiology were celebrated with a google form quiz. This helped to acquaint & enlighten students with the knowledge about the milestone contributions and the profile of the scientist.
A Gyandaan event was organized where the FY students under the mentorship of TY students conducted an exhibition of experimental projects to familiarize school students with concepts in Microbiology. Workshops for detection of adulterants in food and jam making were conducted for general public.
