ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Sociology

The Department of Sociology is dedicated to developing students’ understanding of society, social relationships, and contemporary social issues through quality teaching and research.

The department adopts innovative teaching methods that combine experiential and participative learning through fieldwork, seminars, film screenings, and research activities. Students are encouraged to present their work at academic platforms, including participation in national seminars organized by the Indian Sociological Society. Industrial visits and educational visits to institutions such as the Yusuf Meherally Centre and exposure to local contexts like Mira-Bhayander further enrich learning.

Through expert lectures, workshops, certificate courses, and outreach initiatives like teaching programs for street children, the department promotes interdisciplinary knowledge, social responsibility, and research orientation. It strives to nurture socially aware and responsible
individuals capable of addressing contemporary social challenges.

Academic Year 2025–26

During the academic year 2025–2026, the Department of Sociology actively engaged students through a blend of academic, experiential, and career-oriented activities aimed at holistic development.

To promote experiential learning, educational visits were organized to Saguna Baug, the Yusuf Meherally Centre, the Lonavala Chikki Factory, and the NAB Lions Home for Aging Blind, providing students with practical exposure to rural development, sustainable practices, small-scale industry operations, and social welfare initiatives.

The department also conducted a Workshop on Mindfulness and Sustainability, focusing on enhancing students’ well-being and encouraging environmentally responsible behavior.

In line with career guidance and competitive exam preparation, several expert sessions were organized. A session titled “Cracking the Code: UPSC Preparation Strategies for Sociology and Political Science Graduates” witnessed the participation of 86 students, offering valuable insights into civil services preparation. Another session, “Beyond Books: The Art of Competitive Exam Preparation”, attended by 70 students, emphasized effective study techniques and exam strategies.

Additionally, a career-oriented talk on “From Classroom to Career: Exploring Real and Diverse Career Paths for Sociology Students” was conducted with 73 students, helping them understand various professional opportunities and career pathways.

Students also actively participated in an international conference on “Holistic Wellbeing of Women: Building Health, Dignity and Empowerment for an Inclusive Future”, enhancing their academic exposure and understanding of gender and development issues.

Overall, the department successfully integrated academic learning with practical exposure and career readiness, contributing to the holistic development of students.

  3. Students participated in the IMPR Three-Day Winter School Programme on “From Suffrage to Social Media: Reflections on Four Waves,” enhancing their understanding of feminist discourse and contemporary social issues.

Academic Year 2024-25

During the academic period 2024-2025, the department adopted innovative teaching methods incorporating experiential, participative, and creative learning approaches. Students were encouraged to undertake research activities and present their work at academic forums. A significant achievement was the presentation of a research paper titled “Marginalization and Period Poverty” by a TYBA student at a national seminar organized by the Indian Sociological Society.

To enrich learning beyond the classroom, the department organized various academic activities including seminars, review writing sessions, and screenings of films and documentaries focusing on themes such as gender, environment, and social justice. These activities helped students develop critical thinking and analytical skills.

The department also conducted expert lectures, workshops, and certificate courses on topics such as Bhakti movements, prevention of sexual harassment, and research methodology. These initiatives provided interdisciplinary insights and enhanced students’ academic and professional competencies. Additionally, students participated in a three-day Winter School programme titled “From Suffrage to Social Media: Reflections on Four Waves” organized by IMPR, which deepened their understanding of feminist movements and contemporary discourses.

Educational visits to museums, art galleries, and rural areas were organized to provide experiential learning opportunities and practical exposure to social realities. The department also promoted social responsibility through outreach initiatives, including teaching programs for street children, encouraging students to engage with marginalized communities.

Overall, the Department of Sociology remains committed to nurturing socially aware, responsible and research-oriented individuals capable of understanding and addressing contemporary social challenges.

The Department of Sociology adopts student-centric and innovative practices to enhance learning and social awareness. It emphasizes experiential learning through fieldwork and community engagement in Mira-Bhayander, helping students connect theory with real-life experiences.

The department promotes research-oriented learning by encouraging students to undertake projects and present papers at academic platforms such as the Indian Sociological Society. ICT tools, seminars, film screenings, and participative methods are used to make teaching interactive.
